OCCUPYING LANDSCAPES

This series of large format paintings depicts greek landscapes, landscapes that are steeped in ancient mythology. That is why this work is actually about the structure of the human mind that is hard wired to stories and story telling and is not about landscapes. Stories try to illuminate and explain the phenomena of nature, like droughts, floods, storms, but also death and love. Stories, that within time, turn into mythology and often into religion. Gods are born and temples are built and so cultures and nations develop and battles are fought. In the cold light of day, stories and the subsequent emerging religions are man made and therefore artificial realities which the human being is prepared to defend to the death.
Apparently this painting is the birth place of Dionysos, the God of wine.

TRANSIT

Building a book! We had a great opening for our project 'TRANSIT‘. Together with Brigitte Stüwe we constructed 30 kind of 'scrap books' about a journey within a town and a train journey all the way to China and one in the confines of our imagination, always starting from our local train station which is being restored and will be handed to the citizens of Dorsten 2022. The mayor attended the opening and received the first edition of our artist’s book. The rest were given away to the citizens of Dorsten. It was heart warming to see them obviously happy to clutch and take home one of our books.

ART ASSOCIATION VIRTUELL VISUELL

In my capacity as chair and organizer (I'm not so keen on the word 'curator') of the art association Virtuell Visuell l have the privilege of showing fabulous art within the confines of a huge machine hall on a discontinued colliery 'Zeche Fürst Leopold'.
The place is more than 100 years old and has been beautifully conserved, with all its patina in place.

A HALLUCINOGENIC TOPOGRAPHIE!

A couple of years ago I decided to embark on another try at reading Dante's 'Divine Comedy'.
Suffice it to say that I failed to finish it again. However, I have collected enough material to start on a series of 9+1 paintings depicting various forms of rings. Dantes description of his inferno is so complicated, bizarre and exquisite that I have a suspicion there were some mushrooms involved, hence the title of the series.
A contemporary reference to Dante's inferno is a wonderful essay by Durs Grünbein 'Galileo vermisst Dantes Hölle'. Born 1265, Dante had whole artistic generations trying to reconstruct his inferno according to his writings, among others the great Sandro Botticelli. None of their depictions are convincing, and proves that writing is an art in itself and cannot be replicated one to one.
That is why I won't be painting his hell, but 9+1 rings of my own choosing painted on printed linen of all sorts of mathematical and other scientific diagrams. Please go to PROJECTS in the menu to find out more....
